Lockheed Martin Accelerating Talent Development in DevSecOps through Registered Apprenticeship

Kimberly Success Story

The Lockheed Martin DevSecOps Technical Accelerator Program (DSO-TAP), a US DOL Registered Apprenticeship program, fosters the development of cutting-edge technologies to help the company bring value to customers even faster. DSO-TAP is focused on upskilling employees who have a minimum of two years technical/engineering experience on Infrastructure, Automation (CI/CD), Cloud, Security, DevOps, and Agile. The Registered Apprenticeship program is 1-2 years in duration and includes a combination of training, on-the-job experience and individual coaching/mentoring to reach DevSecOps-defined competencies and achieve a certification.

Kimberly joined the United States Coast Guard after high school. After she left the Coast Guard, she worked at several jobs in a variety of industries and then was a stay-at-home mom. Kimberly is now a Software Engineer, has been with Lockheed Martin for over seven years and is an apprentice in the DSO-TAP program. DevSecOp knowledge and skills are essential in Kimberly’s role.

“The DSO-TAP program really helped me quickly get up to speed on technologies that my new program was using every day. DSO-TAP also opened the doors to new ways of doing things; it helps me suggest different ideas that go against the grain of what already exists. Additionally, I’ve been able to take some of the practices I learned on the DSO-TAP program and apply them to a new pipeline that we have been tasked with getting running; without a lot of the training and experience I’ve had on DSO-TAP, it wouldn’t have come together as quickly as it did,” Kimberly said. “The highlight of my DSO-TAP experience would be networking and meeting people that are like-minded in wanting to increase the overall knowledge of DevSecOps as a practice at Lockheed Martin.”

Kimberly has applied what she has learned in DSO-TAP to implement a new tool that streamlined a process to demonstrate improvements and program efficiencies. Since DSO-TAP was launched at the end of 2021, over 90 employees have joined the program. DSO-TAP apprentices like Kimberly are strengthening their skills that support Lockheed Martin in keeping our customers “Ahead of Ready”.
