Event Description

To effectively serve today’s youth, workforce professionals must embrace the same learning journey we expect young people to take. This interactive session introduces a data-driven approach to staff development by positioning youth-serving practitioners as apprentices themselves.

Drawing on the National Institute for Work and Learning’s (NIWL) Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship (YDPA) model and national implementation insights, participants will explore how structured, competency-based learning strengthens essential skills including coaching, relationship-building, trauma-informed practice, digital fluency, and reflective service.

Participants will experience elements of an apprenticeship firsthand through a short, interactive “mini apprenticeship” simulation while learning core Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) components and how they translate into workforce environments. Real-world examples from employers, apprentices, and system leaders will highlight impacts such as stronger staff confidence, improved youth engagement, reduced turnover, and clearer career pathways.

The session concludes with practical tools and templates organizations can implement immediately to launch or strengthen apprenticeship-based professional development inside American Job Centers and related youth-serving systems.
